Free mobile speed test app

FCC Speed Test is a mobile application by the Federal Communications Commission to help users measure their internet speeds. This free network app works similarly to existing speed-testing services, such as Ookla's and Fast by Netflix. It automatically collects and displays data once you press the Start Testing button.

By default, FCC Speed Test will test your smartphone's internet connection—either WiFi or cellular data—every 24 hours. However, you can configure your preferred schedule and allocate how much data they can consume. Note that it will collect information, such as IP address, device type, operating system, and your internet service provider.

How does the app work?

FCC Speed Test was developed as part of the FCC's Measuring Broadband America Program. It is a Congressional mandate to collect and make publicly available accurate and transparent performance metrics on US broadband. The government agency does this by running active tests to evaluate the download and upload speeds, latency, packet loss, and jitters. As mentioned, the app runs tests over both WiFi and cellular connections.

The app is easy to use. Once installed and launched, it will schedule periodic background checks every 24 hours. However, you can set your preferred schedule and even run manual tests whenever you like. Moreover, it allows you which tests you would like to perform. FCC Speed Test uses data, but you can set a monthly data cap to ensure that you will not go over your limit.

With FCC Speed Test's built-in GUI, you can compare tests and historical data and see the changes on your mobile data. You can also export additional data collected. As noted, the app does not require any information, such as name, phone number, or other identifiable data. With this, you don't have to worry about your security.

Is the app worth downloading?

FCC Speed Test is a handy tool to have if you want to keep tabs on your mobile broadband's performance. With the app, you can easily run tests to know your internet speed. Not only that, but you can also send a complaint to the FCC directly if your internet speeds are often poor. It only works for mobile devices, though, so it is not an overall speed tester.

PROS

  • Scheduled speed tests
  • No personally identifiable information is collected
  • Allows manual tests
